India gears up to join L4UHC
India is gearing up to join the L4UHC programme as part of its drive to accelerate UHC across the country’s 1.3 billion-strong population.
Leadership for Universal Health Coverage (L4UHC) is implemented by P4H partners namely France, Germany, the International Labor Organization (ILO), Switzerland, the United States, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization (WHO), in cooperation with other partners within the P4H network. As GIZ is one of P4H partners globally, GIZ India’s IGUHC is leading coordination effort in organizing the program cycle in India.
India is deeply committed to its quest towards achieving UHC as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. India seeks to ensure that all Indians have access to the required health services without fear of facing financial hardships.

Despite the widespread support for UHC, achieving it at country level is contentious and complex. Successful implementation of UHC reforms requires individuals, groups, and organizations to work collaboratively towards achieving a complex set of objectives and staying focused on results.
The L4UHC Program, a capacity development program, supports leaders and policy makers in advancing and accelerating their UHC reforms by supporting individuals and country teams with leadership development, coalition building support and results-oriented collective action initiatives. The program aims to move the UHC process forward in India and to help build effective and sustainable coalitions for UHC.

This cycle of L4UHC program is organized around 3 national modules and several in-country workshops, held over the course of one year. The first Module will take place later this year or early next year. India will be the 15th nation to take part in this initiative, underlining L4UHC’s growing popularity and value.
