INDO-GERMAN PROGRAMME ON UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE

2014

IGSSP organised its first Indo German Dialogue “Share experiences, develop solutions – Occupational Health and Safety in the Indian Construction Sector” in September 2014.

Even though India has a regulatory framework for the construction industry, lack of resources and capacity regarding qualified occupational health and safety (OHS) personnel weakens regulation and implementation of workplace safety rules. Germany has had long-standing expertise on OHS in the construction industry and was the first country worldwide to establish a workers’ compensation scheme 130 years back. With this perspective, IGSSP organised its first Indo German Dialogue “Share experiences, develop solutions – Occupational Health and Safety in the Indian Construction Sector” in September 2014. The objective was to establish a platform where multiple actors could come together and find workable solutions. The Dialogue was supported by the German Embassy in New Delhi, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and the German Social Accident Insurance for the Construction Sector (BG BAU), and brought together German experts in occupational health and safety and protective equipment manufacturers with Indian construction firms, technical experts, safety research and advocacy bodies, workers unions and civil society.
