Both nations, India and Germany, share an unwavering commitment to realizing Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, with a particular emphasis on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development underscores UHC as a pivotal strategy guiding health measures, prompting an increasing focus on initiatives to structure and propel the implementation of UHC. In this context, GIZ plays a crucial role by providing technical cooperation at both national and state levels for the design, implementation, and monitoring of the Ayushman Bharat scheme through the Indo-German Program on Universal Health Coverage (IGUHC).

The Indo-German Program on Universal Health Coverage (IGUHC) is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) serves as GIZ's primary commissioning party. It entrusts Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with implementing advisory projects aimed at enhancing the capacities of individuals, organizations, and societies to improve their living conditions through the efficient and sustainable use of resources. The BMZ establishes guidelines and fundamental concepts that form the basis of German development policy, devises long-term cooperation strategies, and defines the rules for their implementation. These foundations underpin collaborative projects with partner countries and international development organizations, guided by the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF)

Since its inception, the Gates Foundation has maintained a special focus on the health sector and global development, addressing the needs of communities worldwide. Presently, BMGF funds projects in over 100 countries, guided by strategic policies for allocating funds to various priority areas. The foundation collaborates closely with GIZ India’s Indo-German Programme on Universal Health Coverage (IGUHC) to bolster public health in the country, providing co-financing for the project.
